Tirzepatide · Dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist, FDA-approved
The dual-agonist prescription medicine behind Mounjaro and Zepbound.
What it is
Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1. It is FDA-approved as Mounjaro (type 2 diabetes, 2022) and Zepbound (chronic weight management, 2023; obstructive sleep apnoea with obesity, 2024).
Its trials showed larger average weight reduction than semaglutide in head-to-head comparison, with a similar gastrointestinal side-effect profile.
How it works
The dual mechanism combines GLP-1 effects on appetite and gastric emptying with GIP signalling. Trials ran 72 weeks and longer, measuring A1c, weight and, later, sleep-apnoea severity.

Is it legal?
Tirzepatide is FDA-approved under its brand names. Compounded copies were allowed during the FDA shortage; the shortage was declared resolved and compounding of copies is now restricted, with FDA warnings about unapproved products. This is a general note, not legal advice.
Frequently asked questions
How is tirzepatide different from semaglutide?
It acts on two receptors (GIP and GLP-1) rather than one. Our comparison page walks through the published trial context for both.
Is it approved for weight loss?
Yes — as Zepbound, for chronic weight management in adults meeting the label criteria. Whether it is appropriate for you is a prescribing decision.
Does this site prescribe or sell it?
No. Vitrex sells nothing. A provider at Doctor G Medical may consider approved medicines after an intake; that is their decision.
