Shockwave therapy · Real evidence for a few tendon problems

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy, where it works and where it is sold.

Revisado médicamente por Bernard Garcia, MD

Qué es

ESWT delivers acoustic pulses to injured tissue. It is FDA-cleared for plantar fasciitis and lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), with reasonable evidence for several chronic tendinopathies. Low-intensity shockwave is also marketed for erectile dysfunction, where evidence is preliminary.

Cómo funciona

Mechanical stimulation is thought to trigger a repair response and reduce pain signalling. Several sessions are typical; results are modest but durable in responders. It is not useful for acute injuries.
