Oxytocin · Approved for labour, researched for much else
A hormone with a narrow approval and a wide research footprint.
Qué es
Oxytocin is a peptide hormone with an FDA-approved injectable form (Pitocin) for inducing or augmenting labour and controlling postpartum bleeding. Separately, intranasal oxytocin has been studied for social behaviour, anxiety, autism and sexual function — mostly in small trials with inconsistent results.
Cómo funciona
Oxytocin acts on receptors in the uterus and in brain regions involved in social bonding. The approved use is well characterised; the behavioural research is early and often fails to replicate at larger scale.

¿Es legal?
Injectable oxytocin is FDA-approved for obstetric use only. Intranasal and other forms for behavioural purposes are not approved; compounded versions are a prescriber's off-label decision. This is a general note, not legal advice.
Preguntas frecuentes
Is the "love hormone" idea real?
Oxytocin is involved in bonding behaviour in animals and people, but the popular framing overstates what small nasal-spray trials have shown.
Can it be prescribed off-label?
Compounded intranasal oxytocin exists and is a provider's off-label decision. This site does not recommend it.
Is it a peptide?
Yes — a nine-amino-acid peptide hormone.
