HCG · Approved fertility medicine, misused for weight loss

A hormone with specific approvals — and an FDA warning about diet clinics.

Revisado médicamente por Bernard Garcia, MD

Qué es

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is FDA-approved for ovulation induction, certain cases of male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and cryptorchidism. It is also used off-label alongside testosterone therapy to preserve fertility.

The FDA has stated plainly that hCG is not approved for weight loss and that "hCG diet" products are unproven; since 2020 hCG is regulated as a biologic, which restricted compounding.

Cómo funciona

hCG mimics luteinising hormone, stimulating the ovaries or testes. The approved uses are well characterised. Weight-loss use has been tested in controlled trials and found no better than placebo.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is the hCG diet real?

Controlled trials showed no benefit over placebo, and the FDA has warned against it.

Why do men on testosterone ask about it?

Because testosterone suppresses natural production and fertility; hCG is discussed off-label to counter that. A provider decides.

Is it a peptide?

It is a glycoprotein hormone — larger than a peptide, but often discussed in the same conversations.
